The current prize pool is the greatest so far this year and the third-largest in the history of the American lottery game. According to a Powerball news release, it is also the seventh-largest jackpot in the history of the United States lottery.
As no ticket matched all six numbers drawn on Monday night, the big prize, which has an estimated cash value of $551.7 million, continued to climb toward the $1 billion mark, according to Powerball.
Two tickets, nevertheless, were bought in Michigan and Delaware, matched all five white balls, and won $1 million in rewards. By integrating Power Play, a feature that allows a winner to multiply the initial amount of non-jackpot rewards for an additional $1 each play, two other tickets, sold in New York and South Carolina, successfully matched all five white balls and won $2 million prizes.
The previous jackpot winner took home $1.08 billion on July 19, when a ticket bought in California matched all five white balls and the red Powerball. Powerball reported that 32 straight draws have passed since then without a jackpot winner.
Powerball jackpot winners have the option of taking their winnings in 30 annual payments spread over 29 years, or they can take them all at once. Federal and local taxes are not included in either of the listed prize selections.
According to Powerball, the jackpot’s growth is dependent on game sales and player engagement, but the odds of winning the top prize remain the same at 1 in 292.2 million.
Powerball tickets are available for purchase in 45 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands for $2 each.
